Toyota reveals fuel cell production plans

Toyota could start selling fuel cell-powered cars by 2015.

Japanese car manufacturer Toyota has revealed it may start selling fuel cell-powered vehicles as early as 2015.

The company announced that production of hydrogen fuel cell-powered models will step up in the coming years.

Toyota is following in the footsteps of rival Hyundai, which is planning to begin mass production of these types of vehicles next year.

Honda is also expected to follow suit in the coming months, but fellow Asian manufacturer Nissan revealed its plans are currently on hold due to concerns over infrastructure.

Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Nissan, told Reuters: "Frankly, I don't know how they are going to do it, because knowing all the problems we have, to have a charging system with electricity, where is the hydrogen infrastructure?"

Toyota's share price is slightly down this morning (November 21st) on the back of the announcement. At 08:15 GMT, its stocks were down 0.21 per cent for the session.
