The Nikkei has reached its highest point in five years in today's trading (April 11th).

It rose 0.8 per cent to stand at 13,398.41 at the midday break after previously reaching 13,496.28, which was the index's highest since July 2008.

The Nikkei has had a strong week so far and yesterday it closed 0.7 per cent up on the start of the day's trading, the highest point it had shut at since August 2008.

"As long as the dollar is hovering just below 100 yen, investors may not chase the market higher. The 100-mark is a big milestone, so if it reaches that level, more buying will be seen," Masaru Hamasaki, a senior strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui Asset Management, told Reuters.

Panasonic Corp was up by 4.9 per cent to boost the Nikkei to a new five-year high, with the electronics giant one of the biggest movers on the index in this morning's trading.

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group were among those to grow the index with rises in their share prices yesterday.
