Nikkei edges down as investors await Fed decision

Japanese stocks ended slightly lower today (October 28th) on profit taking, as investors await the outcome of the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting.

The US central bank meeting, held in Washington today and tomorrow, comes as the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is expected to end its monthly asset purchase programme and maintain interest rates at a record low.

Stocks also came under selling to lock in profits, following last week’s strong rebound.

Meanwhile, the shares of retail giants Seven & I Holdings and Aeon Co rose one per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively on the back of the strongest increase in Japanese retail sales since March, Reuters report.

The Nikkei closed down 0.4 per cent at 15,329.91 points, while the broader Topix dipped 0.2 per cent to 1,252.00 and the new JPX-Nikkei Index 400 fell 0.2 per cent to 11,393.61.
