FTSE 100 flat as UK retail sales disappoint in January

The UK’s retail sector has disappointed again, as January volumes slide.

The FTSE 100 is flat in trading this morning (February 15th), on disappointing news the UK's retail sector failed to pick up in January.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), volumes fell by 0.6 per cent from December 2012, as the heavy snowfall that affected much of the country prevented people from getting into towns and retail parks to enjoy the month's sales.

The statistics body highlighted weak sales in the food sector – which were down by 2.6 per cent year on year to the lowest level since April 2004.

Furthermore, the ONS said that sales at petrol stations made the biggest contribution to the fall in the amount spent over the 31-day month.

At 10:50 GMT, the FTSE 100 was flat, making a marginal loss of 0.4 points to an index value of 6326.9 points.
