Flybe has confirmed plans to close down six of its bases as part of its goal of saving £85 million.

Aberdeen, Guernsey, Inverness, Isle of Man, Jersey and Newcastle will be shut down in the next few weeks, the airline revealed.

It announced that around 500 jobs are going to be lost as a result, despite the firm returning to profit in its latest financial results, released last week.

Chief executive Saad Hammad explained that the job losses are necessary in order to secure a future for the company.

He said: "I am grateful to the various union and staff representatives for the very constructive manner in which we have been able to commence the consultation process."

Jim McAuslan, general secretary of pilots' union Balpa, described the job losses as "extremely disappointing".

Flybe lost £1.6 million in the six months to September 30th last year, but recently announced it turned this into a £13.8 million profit in 2013.

The airline's share price has fallen in the early stages of trading this morning (November 18th), dropping by 0.77 per cent by 08:20 GMT.
