Shares in BP have rallied on the London Stock Exchange this morning (February 25th) ahead of the civil trial the oil giant is facing.

The company is set to begin proceedings over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill that became the US's worst environmental disaster.

BP will be pitted against the US states that were affected by the spill and the Department of Justice and it could face penalties of up to $17.6 billion – the biggest civil fine in history.

The trial – which is to be held in New Orleans – follows BP's agreement to pay $4.5 billion (£2.9 billion) to settle criminal charges relating to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

BP faces civil fines of between $4.5 billion and $17.6 billion.

At 12:05 GMT, shares in BP rose by two per cent to an index value of 453.30p per unit.
